Amelie Mauresmo announced her retirement from professional tennis yesterday (December 2nd).
The 30-year-old's future has been in question after she decided to take a break following a second-round reverse against Aleksandra Wozniak at the US Open in September.
Mauresmo, who won the Australian Open and Wimbledon in 2006, admitted that she decided to hang up her racket after realising she no longer has the dedication to continue.
"It's a bit sad, but this is the right decision. I was lucky enough to have an exceptional career and to experience very strong feelings on the court," she said.
"I dreamt of this career, I dreamt of winning a Grand Slam title. I lifted trophies in every city in the world and I lived ten magical and unbelievable years."
The Frenchwoman added that she no longer possesses the desire to put in the hard work required to produce the kind of tennis that saw her become world number one in September 2004.
Mauresmo won 25 titles during her career, the last of which came at the Open GDF Suez in Paris in February.
