Tennis Equipment

The best example of the advances in tennis equipment came in the shape of Bjorn Borg's attempted comeback in the early 1990s.

Using commonly used tennis equipment, the Swede won the Wimbledon men's crown on five consecutive occasions between 1976 and 1980, but retired from the sport when still in his mid-20s, shocking the tennis world in the process.

His decision to return did not come as nearly such a big shock. However his determination to continue using old tennis equipment in the form of a wooden racket [similar to the one he had favoured in his heyday] was doomed to failure.

In an age when graphite rackets were to the fore in tennis equipment, Borg found himself on the receiving end of some humiliating defeats and it came as no surprise when he quit the sport for a second time.

Wooden racket tennis equipment are museum pieces now, with graphite rackets favoured by all of the top players as they battle it out for supremacy.

The power generated by the 21st century tennis equipment versions is truly astonishing. You only have to watch the likes of Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Maria Sharapova or Venus Williams in action to see how the power game reigns supreme.

We can only hope that Tennis equipment continues to makes advances, improving the glorious nature of the sport.
