Andre Agassi

Undoubtedly one of the most popular players of all time, Andre Agassi was also a highly versatile and durable performer.

Born on April 29th 1970 in Las Vegas, his career contained all the glitz and glamour associated with his home town.

Andre Agassi burst onto the scene in the late 1980s as a flamboyant teenager complete with colourful dress sense, long hair and ear-ring. Such was his rebellious attitude that he refused to play at Wimbledon due to the All England Club's conservative white dress code.

However, by 1992 Andre Agassi had softened his stance and Wimbledon was the scene of his first Grand Slam victory as he thrilled the crowds with a five-set triumph against Goran Ivanisevic.

The other three Grand Slams were added to his collection over the next seven years as he became only the fifth player ever to win all four. He won eight Grand Slam titles in total, with the Australian Open being his most productive as he won in Melbourne four times.

Andre Agassi's career took several downturns as he battled against injury, loss of form and personal problems as his first marriage to actress Brooke Shields broke up. But each time he fought back thanks to his dogged determination to prove the doubters wrong.

He reinvented himself in the late 1990s as a bandana-clad 'pirate' with the long locks now shorn and ended a barren four years with victory at the 1999 French Open. Four more Grand Slam titles were still to come his way.

Marriage and children with Steffi Graf also followed and Agassi made an emotional farewell to tennis at the 2006 US Open.
