Despite a difficult career littered with controversy and personal problems, Jennifer Capriati is still one of the most talented players America has ever produced.
Jennifer Capriati won a total of 14 singles titles, including three Grand Slams, and an Olympic gold medal in the 1992 Barcelona Games, along with achieving world number one status as well.
In 1989, Jennifer Capriati showed her promise with victories in both the French Open and US Open junior singles tournaments, along with junior doubles glory at the US Open and Wimbledon.
She turned professional in March 1990, just before her 14th birthday, and became the youngest player to reach a WTA Tour final, losing out to Gabriela Sabatini at an event in Florida.
The following year, Jennifer Capriati reached the semi-finals of both Wimbledon and the US Open, and won two Tour titles as she began to establish herself at the top of the women's game. Things got even better in 1992 as she defeated Steffi Graf in the Olympic final in Barcelona.
However, life took a turn for the worse in 1993 for Capriati. After struggling to cope with mounting expectation on court, she took a break from the game, only to encounter personal and legal problems. She was involved in a shoplifting incident in December, before a marijuana scandal in 1994 made things even more difficult.
She returned to tennis in 1996 and made steady progress up the rankings before eventually becoming number one in the world.
However, she had to wait until 2001 for her first Grand Slam win, when she won the Australian Open. French Open glory followed before she retained her Australian crown in 2002.
Since then, though, she has been troubled by injury.
